Freedom of Expression, Now with Convenience Charges

India’s democracy has taken a decisive step towards financial sustainability: citizens may still raise their voices, provided they first raise the money.

With Jantar Mantar retired as Delhi’s designated protest site, dissent is moving to alternative grounds where outrage will finally contribute to the economy. At Ramlila Maidan, the reported upfront booking bill is Rs 1,21,080.

For years, people complained that nobody listened to the poor. The new arrangement solves this embarrassment by ensuring they cannot afford to assemble.

Please Select the Nature of Your Disappointment

At the booking counter, an unemployed graduate approached an official.

“I want to protest unemployment.”

“Certainly. What is your budget?”

“I don’t have a job.”

“That wasn’t the question.”

The official explained that the Ramlila Maidan charges included a security deposit, rent, sanitation, licensing and GST.

“GST on protesting?”

“Of course. You are consuming democracy.”

“Isn’t it a right?”

“Yes. The right is free. The ground beneath it is not.”

The graduate asked whether he could protest the protest charges.

“Absolutely. That will require a separate booking.”

A Refundable Deposit Against Irreversible Despair

The security deposit is a particularly elegant innovation. Citizens must demonstrate financial stability before explaining that they have none.

Officials clarified that a deposit was not the same as an expense.

“You may get it back,” said one.

“Then why must I find it first?”

“Please don’t politicise accounting.”

This distinction will comfort indebted farmers, unpaid workers and pensioners. Their money will not necessarily be lost; it will merely become unavailable during the precise period when they need it.

Much like justice, but with a receipt.

Kindly Classify Your Existential Crisis

The DDA booking portal reportedly offers categories such as private, spiritual and charity, but no separate category for political protest.

This is not an omission. It is an assessment of the available remedies.

A worker demanding wages may select “charity.” A citizen expecting accountability may select “spiritual.” Anyone wishing to criticise the government should select “private” and keep it that way.

Burari Ground, meanwhile, does not currently appear on the booking list.

This offers citizens a valuable preview of their demands: officially acknowledged, geographically uncertain.

Introducing Dissent Easy Monthly Instalments

Enterprising lenders will surely fill the gap.

“Turn your grievance into a movement with Protest EMI! Minimal documentation. Maximum humiliation. Terms and sedition-related anxieties apply.”

Crowdfunding pages will become admirably specific:

Please help us oppose inflation. Unfortunately, inflation has increased the cost of opposing inflation.

Corporate sponsorship may follow.

“This hunger strike is brought to you by a leading food-delivery app.”

“Workers of the world, unite – after this short message from our staffing partner.”

Placards will carry QR codes. Slogans will pause for payment confirmation. Revolutionaries will argue over whether the sanitation charge can be split equally among comrades who left early.

The government need not silence dissent. It need only make dissent a premium service.

And when citizens finally gather outside the booking office to complain that democracy has become unaffordable, an official will emerge with reassuring news:

“Your grievance is perfectly valid.

“Your gathering, however, is unpaid.”
