Washington discovers that morality, unlike diesel, can be refined indefinitely
The world’s leading exporter of principles has temporarily suspended production owing to high domestic fuel prices.
Following months of explaining that purchasing Russian oil financed aggression, Washington has discovered a previously unknown distinction: Indian purchases finance aggression; American purchases finance affordability.
The difference is scientific. Indian oil is measured in barrels. American oil is measured in swing states.
The Good Barrel Certification Scheme
Under the new arrangement, Russian diesel entering America will undergo rigorous ideological processing. Each shipment will pass through a Treasury-approved filter that removes traces of hypocrisy and replaces them with national interest.
“It’s completely different oil,” explained an imaginary administration official, speaking anonymously because his conscience had not yet received its waiver. “The Russians sell it to India for money. They sell it to us for energy security.”
Asked whether Russia could spend both kinds of money, the official accused the question of helping China.
Previously, New Delhi had attempted the childish argument that a large country must secure affordable energy for its population. Washington rejected this dangerous doctrine.
It has now adopted it.
Naturally, this is leadership.
Sanctions With an Emergency Exit
Congress, meanwhile, has designed a magnificent sanctions law: imposing enough punishment to frighten America’s partners, while including enough discretion to protect America from participating.
This is the legislative equivalent of installing a burglar alarm with a button labelled Exceptions beside the burglar.
The law says buyers must suffer. The waiver clarifies which buyers the law meant.
A statute that threatens everyone until the President needs something is not inconsistent. It is personalised customer service.
American lawmakers should be congratulated. They have finally produced a renewable energy source: the friction generated by reversing themselves.
India Invited to Apologise for Being Early
India’s principal offence, it now appears, was purchasing Russian energy before Washington had completed the moral paperwork.
For fourteen months, India was treated like a schoolboy caught cheating by a headmaster who was merely waiting for the answer sheet.
New Delhi should therefore issue an immediate apology:
“We deeply regret anticipating American foreign policy. In future, we shall wait until your strategic necessity has been formally distinguished from our irresponsible self-interest.”
Indian refineries could assist by renaming their imports.
“Discounted Russian crude” sounds suspicious.
“Democracy-Compatible Transitional Hydrocarbon Support” sounds eligible for a congressional delegation.
One Barrel, Two Consciences
The arrangement also offers a breakthrough in geography. A barrel can now be unacceptable in Rotterdam and essential in New York without changing its contents.
Only its destination requires refining.
European allies may continue making sacrifices. Their reward is the priceless reassurance that the alliance remains united around America’s right to leave the queue.
As for Moscow, it has learned that the customer is always morally right—provided the customer can issue the licence.
The lesson for the rest of the world is straightforward: never confuse a sermon with a policy.
A sermon is what Washington delivers when you buy the oil.
A policy is what Washington changes when it needs the oil.
And a rules-based order is one in which everyone knows who gets to write the exceptions.
