Democracy Goes Platinum: Vadodara PM Show Sells Out Before the Public Could Locate Its Password

BookMyShow pioneers governance-as-entertainment; 42,000 citizens join the national waiting list for a glimpse of participation

Vadodara has achieved what generations of political theorists, municipal officials and cinema ticket scalpers could only dream of: democracy has finally become an event property.

In a first-of-its-kind initiative, citizens were invited to register – free of charge, naturally – for the Prime Minister’s programme via BookMyShow. Within an hour, every seat had been claimed. Over 42,000 hopefuls were reportedly deposited into a waiting list, where they can experience the full modern meaning of public participation: watching the word “Queued” pulse gently on a smartphone screen.

It is a remarkable national advance. In the old days, public meetings were managed through such unreliable methods as open grounds, loudspeakers, party workers, buses, barricades and the mysterious human ability to stand under the sun for five hours. Now, citizenship has been upgraded. You do not merely attend public life – you obtain a QR-enabled, digitally authenticated M-Ticket proving that your enthusiasm has been scanned, verified and permitted through Gate No. 4.

Those unable to secure a seat need not feel excluded. They have already made their contribution. A waiting list of 42,000 is not a technical inconvenience; it is a monument to national feeling. Nothing says “immense public enthusiasm” quite like citizens competing to receive a digital notice informing them that enthusiasm has exceeded venue capacity.

From “We the People” to “Select Your Preferred Slot”

The system is wonderfully efficient. Your relationship with the state now resembles booking a superhero film on a Friday evening. First, choose your city. Then select your date. Then pray the server holds. Soon, perhaps, citizens will be offered optional add-ons:

  • ₹0: General admission to development
  • ₹0: Priority entry into optimism
  • ₹0: Aisle seat near the inauguration
  • ₹99: Complimentary popcorn-flavoured policy document
  • ₹499: VIP glimpse of a foundation stone before it becomes a press release

The digital M-Ticket’s “secure live QR code” is especially reassuring. Earlier, people entered public programmes simply by existing in the public. This was plainly unsafe. A person might arrive carrying questions, opinions, or – worst of all – an inconveniently unscannable face. The QR code corrects this anarchic tradition. It asks not, “Are you a citizen?” but “Has your device been successfully validated?”

No doubt this will make crowd movement smoother. And smooth crowd movement is the highest aspiration of any democracy: citizens entering in neat lines, sitting in allotted rows, applauding at calibrated intervals, and exiting before their excitement accidentally converts into discussion.

₹35,000 Crore Development, Plus Convenience Fee of Faith

The occasion, of course, is not merely a show. It includes development projects worth more than ₹35,000 crore: freight corridors, rail lines, highways, housing, water supply, solar projects and infrastructure linking industrial centres, ports, tribal areas and cities.

The Western Dedicated Freight Corridor will accelerate cargo movement across hundreds of route kilometres. Goods will travel faster, logistics costs may fall, and Mumbai’s railway network may breathe a little easier. The freight train, unlike the citizen, does not need to register on BookMyShow. It merely needs tracks.

New rail projects promise to improve capacity and connectivity. New highways will reduce congestion. A floating solar project will help power the future. A new municipal office will ensure that civic administration has somewhere dignified to process citizens who could not get tickets for civic participation.

The message is clear: the country is moving forward at high speed – by freight corridor, six-lane highway, grade-separated junction and QR-code queue. Only the public must remain stationary long enough for its entry verification.

Coming Soon: The Republic, Now Streaming

There is a certain poetry in launching this innovation before the Prime Minister proceeds to Mumbai for the Global Fintech Fest, whose theme celebrates “Agentic AI, Tokenisation, Quantum” and “Inclusive Finance.”

The future is indeed inclusive. Everyone may register. Everyone may try. Everyone may join the waiting list. And someday, with sufficient technological progress, perhaps everyone will receive an AI-generated apology:

“Dear Citizen, due to unprecedented enthusiasm, your participation could not be accommodated. Please remain proud of the national capacity you helped exceed.”

Until then, Vadodara can take pride in having transformed a public programme into a sold-out national premiere.

The Republic has not closed its doors.

It has simply gone houseful.
