The Plight of Nagasaki

The Plight of Nagasaki
Share on FacebookShare on Xshare on Whatsappshare on Linkedin
Sudipta Mishra, Puri, 10 August 2024

Like everyday,
On the 9th of August
Sun shone in the hills of the industrial town…
Workers of Mitsubishi plant toiled like all the other days,
Worshippers at the nearby cathedral were prepared to pray,
Almost 850 people at Nagasaki Medical University Gate,
Unaware of the sheer destruction marched ahead,
Civilians of this large urban city woke up with hopes high in their eyes…
Suddenly came the “Fat Man”-
A Plutonium Nuclear Weapon,
The Boeing B29 Superfortress
Commanded by the able leadership of Major Sweeney!
Then everything became history!
At 10.30 am , the aircraft reached the targeted city
For dropping the world’s second atomic bomb,
Tore the heart of the city into shreads!
The industrial valley blasted within a few seconds,
Even the intervening hills couldn’t hold their promises!
Everything got shattered,
Stinking corpses piled up everywhere…
From 22000 to 75000 death casualties stirred the entire earth!
Even the following days and months witnessed thousands of deaths,
Nobody could measure the pain of
The obscure sky, the grey air, the red land, and the foggy streets!
The pain lingered through the poisoned air…
The effects of the nuclear radiation lasted for months,
The echoes of the horrible pain resonated through
many voices over the years.
Rotting flesh became the memoir of the horrendous incident…
So many stories were brewed, retold, and rewritten.

By mirroring the plight,
The hollowed eyes of the injured ones hanged like the bats of a burial ground!

Still now the lasting effects of the nightmare continues…
Every time my heart beats faster to not witness another Nagasaki again!

(9th August is commemorated as Nagasaki Day)
