The Nirvik Bureau, Bhubaneswar, 16 January 2026

Prof. Siba Prasad Misra, a renowned Physicist and Mathematician, passed away peacefully on 14th January at his Bhubaneswar residence. He was 94 and was unwell for sometime. Prof. Misra is survived by his wife, Pratima Misra, three daughters, Aparajita, Anindita, and Amruta, and son Aditya.

His academic career, spanning more than fifty years, began at Ravenshaw College, taking him through REC Rourkela (present-day NIT Rourkela) to the Institute of Physics, Bhubaneswar. He established a strong group in particle physics at the Institute of Physics. He was a life member of the Odisha Bigyan Academy and enriched the organisation with his knowledge and experience.

He was a researcher and teacher par excellence, making his students understand the beauty of Physics. He literally lived Physics all his life. His simplicity, depth of understanding, and easy access to students made a deep and lasting impression on his students and the people who came in his contact.

He has left behind a rich legacy – a legacy of brilliant students, spread all across the globe. His research works and scholarship will continue to inspire future generations!

The Physics community, and the wider world of academia, paid homage to the departing soul and offered deep condolences to the bereaved family.

Apart from his sterling contribution to the world of Physics, he was an avid tennis player and followed the game closely for decades. He was a lover of music too and had a wonderful personal collection of music of different genres.

The trustees and members of Sarat Kar & Anima Kar Foundation, and the editorial team and staff of The Nirvik, offer their deepest condolences to the bereaved family and pay their rich tributes to the departed legend of the academic world.
